I didn’t plan on making this an unofficial #AutismAcceptance week. I also didn’t plan on hearing the words “Your son is ASD” about a month ago.
Since then, I have gone through every emotion about it and have done quite a bit of reading about Autism.
I am not a professional at this, a Dr., nor am I hear to tell people anything about how to handle children with autism. I am learning myself.
But in my readings, I have found some things that people withOUT autistic children can learn from to make life easier for autistic people and their families.
The first, 10 Things Autism Parents Wish You Knew. It’s an article on the Autism Speaks website which has all kinds of information about autism. It includes things like not feeling awkward around autistic people, not all autism is alike, and how to handle a situation when an autistic child is having a meltdown. Not a tantrum. Those are two different things.
The second, 10 Ways To Help A Parent Of A Child With Autism. It includes how to handle unwanted attention from strangers and how to support and encourage your friends and family.
Not only that, but you can get involved in central Illinois to help people with developmental disabilities and their families. For more on that, click here.
Friday morning, join me for the final Hot Topic regarding Autism. It isn’t going to be a fun one, but it is a reality for those who have autism. Suicide. It is on the rise for autistic people Find out why and how you can help Friday morning at 7:10a.
