They perform cover versions of modern pop songs and Christmas songs, as well as original material. Their performances are captivating and have made them a worldwide sensation, especially popular with young audiences. The group consists of five members: Scott Hoying, Kevin Olusola, Kirstin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Avi Kaplan. They won The Sing-Off in 2011 and were signed by Madison Gate, a small Sony-owned label, which released their debut EP, PTX, Volume 1, in June 2012. They also started a YouTube channel where they posted videos of their songs, many of which went viral. Their pop-rock covers on YouTube have over 1 billion views. Pentatonix has collaborated with artists like Kelly Clarkson, Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus, and Lindsey Stirling.
