Last night’s MTV VMAs was good! Not, “OMG DID YOU SEE WHAT MILEY CYRUS AND ROBIN THICKE JUST DID?!?!” crazy, but good. The performances were solid, the messages were loud, and the internet had plenty to say.
So, what can we take away from last night? Here are a few things I noticed while watching!
1) Katy Perry should stick to singing!
Listen, I love KP. She has talent for days. But, her comedic routines weren’t a homerun. They kept cutting to Ellen Degeneres, who was not amused. Or, at least it didn’t seem that way. My wife kept pointing it out too. She was so surprised that a comedian wasn’t laughing at Kay Perry’s jokes. I reminded her that people only laugh at things when they are funny.
2) MTV continues to promote forward thinking AND inclusion for all!
A lot of artists and celebrities took the opportunity yesterday to use the power of their voice to promote messages of hope and inclusion for the voiceless and those who feel like life has left them behind!
Pink talked about her daughter being upset about “looking like a boy” while accepting the Van Guard award. Cardi B showed some love to Colin Kaepernik while doing an intro. Paris Jackson stood against white supremacy and hatred. And Logic performed his song for those who are struggling with their own lives. And the message was clear, our favorite artists will NOT allow anyone to be discriminated based on who they are, who they love, or what they believe (as long as it’s right).
3) Taylor Swift is ready to dominate AND brought her sense of humor along!
Taylor Swift takes a lot of heat, and has been really good about not letting it get the best of her… publicly, at least. She has always been humble and low key when faced with some rather bizarre situations. Like, when Kanye took the mic from her at the VMAs. When she could have had a major melt down, she held her tongue. And, in her new video gets the last laugh.
PLUS, at the end, she has all of the different “Taylors” making fun of each other. A lot of what they are saying to each other are thing that people have said over and over again for the last few years.
The song set records with Spotify streaming more than 8 million times the first day AND had over 19 million views on YouTube. Billboard is saying it could sell over 500,000 copies in it’s first week out.
